Hound of Heaven Pope Francis blesses Francesco, a dog guide named after the pope, in St. Peter’s Square in Rome. Holding the puppy is his trainer, Maurizio Familiari, and to his right is Lion Giovanni Fossati, president of a Lions’ dog guide program in Limbiate, Italy. The dog will be given to a blind person in Rome. St. Francis had a special rapport with animals, of course. The blessing was “an extraordinary event that has spiritually unified the pope with the history of the dog guides and has given social relevance to our service for the blind,” according to a statement by the Lions’ office in Italy.
